Home Survival Kit Checklist

Blowing Rock Rescue is encouraging everyone to take preventive measures to ensure their safety during winter storms. Prepare for the possibility that you will need to stay in your home for several days after a winter storm. Make sure that you have sufficient heating fuel as well as emergency heating equipment in case electricity is cut off. Assemble a disaster supply kit and store where you can get them easily, even in the dark. A home survival kit and emergency food and water supply are essential. Here are some essentials that you should have ready and available.

• Portable, battery-powered radio and extra batteries
• Flashlights with extra batteries, battery operated lamps
• Battery powered clock
• Cellular phone
• Manual can opener and bottle opener
• First aid kit
• Prescriptions or special medications (at least 4 day supply)
• Three to five-day supply of non-perishable foods, needing little or no cooking; high nutrition.
• Canned meats
• Canned vegetables
• Canned soups and stews
• Protein bars, granola bars, chocolate bars
• Canned fruit, dried fruit, peanut butter
• Crackers and cookies
• Dry cereal, instant hot cereal, instant oatmeal
• Canned juices, instant coffee, instant tea, instant orange drink, powered milk
• Be sure you pack any special dietary foods, baby food, and formula, if needed.
• Water: Minimum one gallon per person (include pets) per day for drinking (for at least 4 days), cooking, washing, and sanitation. Store as much clean water as possible in clean, non-breakable containers.
• Extra pet food
• Personal hygiene, sanitary supplies, and diapers, waterless soap
• Ice chest and frozen ice packs
• Camp stove or canned heat stove, and enough fuel for three to five days; or hibachi (portable grill) and charcoal
• Hurricane or kerosene lamps and fuel
• Aluminum foil for cooking on camp stove or grill
• Masking tape for windows and glass doors
• Matches in a water-proof container or a lighter
• Disposable plates, utensils, cups, trash bags
• Whistle
• Extra cash
• Fire Extinguisher
